Clint Clark survived a strong challenge by Brian Capps to win the Great Southern Billiard Tour stop on the weekend of February 28-March 1. A total of 48 entrants signed onto the $1,500-added, A-B handicapped amateur event, hosted by Sports Break in Greenwood, SC.
Clark began his five-match run to the final victory with a 7-2 win over Kevin Smith. Scott Rabon, in the meantime, sent Matt Reed west 10-6 to meet Clark in the hot seat match. Clark sent Rabon over to the semifinals with a 10-6 win and waited in the hot seat for Capps.
Capps, on the one-loss side, was on a five-match run to the finals, as well. He got by Antonio Tovar 9-4 and Sam Monday 9-6 for the right to meet Reed. It was Josh Roberts, after a shut-out over Boyd Bouknight and a 9-5 win over Dillon Whaley, who was waiting for Smith. Capps defeated Reed 9-6, as Roberts advanced to the quarterfinals with a 9-5 win over Smith. Capps then dropped Roberts into the fourth place slot 9-6 and eliminated Rabon in the semifinals 9-7.
Capps had his easiest match of the day in the opening set of the true double-elimination finals, defeating Clark 9-3 and forcing a second set. Clark, as a B+ handicap player, needed to win only seven and he did so, winning by three in the second set to take top honors.
